When rescuers from the Marin Humane Society brought this chihuahua mix into the shelter, they knew that something didn’t feel right.
At first, they figured that she was just dealing with the normal anxiety that comes with living in an unfamiliar place. Days later, however, they noticed that she’d barely ventured to the front of her kennel. She sat motionless behind her bed, terrified to approach anyone.
As Lisa Bloch, a representative from the organization, explained to The Dodo, “When she was surrendered to us, she was really scared and acting aggressive. We could barely examine her.” Something unsettling was affecting the poor pup, and they quickly figured out what it was.
This is Cora. During her first few days at the shelter, the dog made it clear that she was scared, confused, and deeply anxious.
Much to their surprise, rescuers figured out that Cora was a mom! They reached out to her original owner and learned that she had no intention of surrendering the puppies. After a while, they managed to convince the woman to give them up.
Cora’s entire attitude changed when they brought in her babies. The dog that barely moved started wagging her tail. The scared animal that trusted no one ran to the front of her kennel.
Bloch noticed that Cora’s sweet, loving personality finally came through as soon as she saw her pups. At just a few weeks old, they can’t be away from Mom yet, and something tells me that she doesn’t mind one bit.
Check out the precious family in action!

Rescuers hope to place Cora and her puppies in a foster home so that she’ll be able to nurse them in peace. Their main concern is that Cora will be left behind when the puppies are old enough to be adopted, but many potential adopters have already expressed their interest in giving her a forever home!
