Many on Twitter are reporting that WhatsApp, the most popular messaging app for smartphones, is down today. Facebook recently purchased WhatsApp for $19 billion.

So, is this a distributed denial of service attack, or is WhatsApp a victim of its own popularity, as millions sign up for the service every day?
